“Shadows and Lights. Africa” is a musical and visual journey deep into the continent. The photographs, saturated in African light, guide the viewer from Islamic north all the way down to the southern coastline, showing the inhabitants’ everyday life, joys and sorrows, local rituals. The project is an attempt to grasp the continent’s distinctive atmosphere with all its complexity and variety, for, as Ryszard Kapuściński wrote, “There are many Africas (...).”

The presented photographs are selection from a bigger project under the same title. It consists of almost 200 photographs and takes the form of a slide show, presented in time with a specially chosen soundtrack. Individual parts of the material are compiled to the rhythm of both genuine regional music and works inspired by Africa.

The photographs, which constitute a personal recording of multiple journeys through the continent, were taken in the years 2005 – 2010 in Algeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, DR Congo, Lesotho, Mali, South Africa, Rwanda, Swaziland, Tanzania and Uganda.
